Bobby Convict

Whenever a television movie about criminal behavior airs, people debate whether it is helpful and informative to people as a warning of what to watch out for, or a regular Crime 101 course for beginning drug traffickers. You’ll have to read this book to decide for yourself which way this one goes, but if nothing else, it’s a good read about a former drug dealer whose life has been changed.

Bobby Wilhelm wrote a book telling about his life as an Idaho drug dealer and his life in prison. The title is Bobby Convict: School of Hard Knocks. From his early life playing pool in his dad’s bar to his high school bar-tending days to his cocaine addiction which began at age 21, he reviews the drama and tragedy of his life.

After only the second use of cocaine, he became a dealer, and not long after that he moved to another city to get away from law enforcement officers. Eventually he worked his way up in the drug world, spending time in Miami and earning about $75,000 a month. During his sixteen years in prison he met such notable criminals as Paul Schneider, a former Aryan Brotherhood leader, Timothy McVeigh, the Oklahoma City bomber, and organized crime figures like Charlie Iannece, Anthony Pungitore and Gene Gotti.

Wilhelm says that he prayed and said, “Jesus, if you give me a chance, I'll never get in trouble again in my life and I'll be a good dad.” Still, he was surprised when he was released from prison seven years ago. But with help from Idaho State Representative Bob Nonini speaking up from him and helping him some since he was released, he has kept his promise and stayed on the straight and narrow path.

Nonini said, "We get asked a lot as legislators to help people and I was putting my reputation and neck on the line. Bobby has held up on his end of the bargain and has turned his life around 180 degrees."

Hopefully his book will provide some help to law enforcement officers who can benefit from learning more about the how and where and why of drug trafficking. And with him staying clean, it will provide inspiration for the millions of people who are where he used to be.
